It only takes a second for someone to pull that and is not easily noticed with a quick glance. The friend that I ride with taught me this. I don't have a horse trailer, but do on occasion haul either of my father's flat beds with hay or what have you on them. Before I met her I'd glance and make sure it looked okay, but she always checks that the coupler is tight on the ball, all the pins are there, the wires plugged tight, etc...
