RE: [RC] bowed tendons - Mike SofenMy first endurance horse was an ex-racehorse who was retired due to a fully bowed left front tendon one year earlier. When I bought him, he was totally sound, however, rather stupidly I did not have ultrasounds done. Had I done so, it would have revealed that only superficial healing had occurred. So I put him into training, and within a few months, he was lame on that leg. Ultrasounds then showed a large lesion in the tendon. I used a TENS unit to rehab the tendon along with daily rehab protocols. He became sound again, starting training again, and was able to compete on him on and off for 8 years. The problem was, the restructuring of the injured tendon to a functional one seemed to require periodic lameness as lesions (or whatever, I'm not a vet) broke and then got repaired. So in my case, it took nearly 3 years of sometimes heartbreaking ups and downs until that leg stabilized. However, since it stabilized, he has never been lame on it since then (over 5 years). The message here - if a soft tissue injury is properly treated at the time of initial trauma, chances are good that a full rehab is both possible and permanent. If untreated or treated improperly, a full rehab is still possible, but be prepared for ongoing lameness events until it stabilizes. Mike -----Original Message----- Knowing this has been brought up in the past but having trouble finding the subject in the archives, I ask your indulgence... Looked today at a young (7 yr old) Arab who has an old tendon injury from being worked too hard too fast too young... damage is about 3 or 4 yrs old. He appears sound on it. I'm interested in using him for 50's once he's in shape. He's out of a mare named Mi Gay Chanel... Anyone know of this mare? Any input? and more important- What do I ask the vet to check when he does a prepurchase exam?
