[RC] about vets and feet - Alice Yovich

This is soooo true. One of the reasons I parted ways with my farrier was b/c the vet wanted him to work with my mare a certain way. We discussed it at a vet visit. He wrote out exactly how he wanted her done. i talked to my farrier who said "the vet doesn't have any idea if this will work or not. What I do won't affect her stifle at all" and he proceeded to do her the exact same way. I talked to the vet again, omitting the part where the farrier said he didn't know anything, and we tried again, and I got the same response. So, I switched farriers. The new farrier did exactly what the vet said and voila, sound horse. Funny part is that all of a sudden the old farrier has started trimming everyone the way I wanted him to for me in the first place. Only, I was told if I wanted him back, I'd have to beg. I just can't see begging to get someone back who wouldn't do it right. My old farrier is a great farrier for the girl's who use him in dressage. He helps their horses' movement with his trims, but he didn't work for me.

What one REALLY needs in the best interests of
one's horses is a GOOD veterinarian AND a GOOD farrier (or "hoof care
specialist") who will work WITH each other, and who respect each other's
expertise.
