I agree....you can't make a kid "want to please" to the degree that it takes to do this sport.  My mother-in-law thinks that I have brain washed my daughter (Joni) into liking horses and endurance.  She is 10 years old, started when she was 8 (SE region rules) and has more knowledge/experience than many adults.  All of this because SHE wants to do it.  Just ask anybody in the SE, they will tell you she loves it and cries if she is pulled.  But the best part is :  She really cares for the horse and doesn't want to hurt them.  That it what it takes to do this sport, respect and love for the horse.
