The most believable version I saw on the web was that the hunters 
killed the cat and put it on the back of the mule , then decided to 
take a picture of the cougar on the back of the mule.  At this point 
the mule pulled the cat off its back and attacked it.  It does look 
like the cat is trying to scratch the mule in one of the pictures, but 
it could just as easily be  the force of the swing causing that.
