Unfortunately, I have a mare that has abscessed more than a couple times. What works great and quickly:
Have the farrier make a
hole
if he can find the precise spot so it can drain (sounds like you did)
Get some
green goop
from your vet (sorry forget what it's called), that is made mostly of Epsom salts and smells like menthol.
Put said
green goop
on piece of
4x4 gauze
Put
gauze
and
goop
over the abscess
Cover foot with a
baby diaper,
use the sticky tabs to secure
Cover the sole with about 4 layers of
duct tape
in a 5x5 or so square
Use more
duct tape
to secure the square to the bottom of the foot by wrapping around below the coronet band.
This stays on pretty well, even in pasture, and really draws out the abscess.
