RE: [RC] Feeding Questions - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.Well, my experience with folks feeding corn or oats is that quite a bit seems to end up in the manure. I do believe some get digested. Perhaps you can help me out here with understanding some of this. If you look closely at the leftover grain in poop (with gloves on, preferably), you'll notice that mostly what's remaining is the outer husk, and the starch and germ portion inside is mostly gone. It's not 100% digestion in that form, but pretty darn close. Again...my oversight. She categorized BP as just another roughage which it is. I just threw it in with the grains as needing to be soaked. Sorry. No worries, just wanted to clarify that. :-) My horse is boarded with a friend and she just soaks the BP, flax, BOSS mixture for only about 15-20 minutes. I've taken to personally adding water to my horse's bucket so it gets to soak longer. Occasionally this might be OK but I do feel a longer soaking period is needed. What would you consider to be minimal soaking? 1Hour? (I know there are exceptions of course) I think one hour as a general rule is a pretty good one. At the very least, I would add tons of water to the mash and make sure the stuff could continue to soak up water as the horse was eating it. If nothing else, having to play 'bobbing for apples' in a big tub of water isn't a bad way to get them to slow down a bit from snarffling it all up like a vacuum cleaner.
