Re: [RC] Returning to competition after foaling - heidiWhat about tying up? I have heard that mares tie up more than geldings. (don't flame me....just a rumor I hear around camp....) Yep, Karla, that is exactly what it is--a rumor you hear around camp. There has been some thought over the years that estrogens might play some role in tying up--but no one has ever been able to document it. So when mares tie up, some folks say, "Oh, she's a mare," but when a gelding or a stallion ties up, people try to look for the real cause. The mare I rode did have a tendency to tie up--had nothing to do with being a mare, but rather had to do with the fact that she was less efficient with her selenium than some of the others in my herd (which is mostly mares). Was able to confirm this by blood testing. Giving her more selenium than the others cured the problem.
