Re: [RC] For all you farrier types - heidiWhat equipment have you found that works well for you, rasps, nippers, etc. I'm a far cry from being a "real" farrier type, but have had to do my share of trimming and shoeing over the years, and I still do a bit of work on our youngsters and stallions to save $$ on farrier bills. My only advice is that if you are going to do much trimming at all, invest in a really GOOD set of stainless steel nippers, not just the cheap ones you can typically get from the feed store. They are better balanced, and most importantly, they hold their edge much better, so that you can nip and not have to be a Mega-Muscles to get them through the hoof wall! Also, get a good sharp rasp, and don't feel bad about replacing it when it gets dull. And keep it in a sheath to help prevent it getting dull just bumping around in the tack room or the tool bucket. However, if you get a top-notch set of nippers, you will also find that you do such a better job of nipping that you have a whole lot less left to rasp... :-) Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
