I only ride safety, which I learned can be a curse and a blessing. I ride novice safety all the time, and my mare seems to have a great brain for that, but the added speed and excitement of the open pace was a little much for her. She bucked and longed and just generally "played" all w/e. A friend of mine laughed a bit and said I would adjust to having such a fit horse. I told her I didn't want to adjust. I wanted the mare to "get over it" She never did anything malicious, but man, was she ever feisty. What to do to get this new behavior under control?Maybe do a 100-miler? ;-) I remember once clearing trails in Bankhead National Forest in Alabama with Jackie Mitchell. Her horse got loose and went back down the trail to the dirt road. As we were going after the horse, a fellow in a pickup stopped and offered to help. He said, "How far can the horse run anyway?" To which Jackie replied, "Oh, about a hundred miles!" -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
