Re: [RC] Hugo the Mule - Steven ProeHi Folks: I had the privilege of riding with Eva and her Mules on Tevis apparently some of Eva's last rides. She was one tough lady. A short story just before we were both pulled on time at Francisco's, I had just passed her along Foresthill road and was a ways down the trail, when I heard a cry for help way behind me. I was late, but had to turn back to see what was wrong (asking myself why, especially on Tevis, and running late) I found Eva and her mule in the middle of Foresthill Rd. for what ever the reason were unable to move from that spot.( I was glad that I turned back at that moment) We were able to get them out of the road and back on the trail again and to Francisco's with no problems. The to Finish to Win, saying in my opinion needs to include the ride is important even if you don't Finish even on Tevis. If I hadn't turned around to help I would have never meet and enjoyed the Ladies company and her stories. Incidentally it may have been the next year again on Tevis that we meet again further down the trail on the California Trail below Forest Hill and again road together to Francisco's. I still get tears thing about these events. I have tried to send this to ridecamp on a scanned attachment but it has been rejected as too big. The title is "One of the toughest mules around dies, 38" Hugo and his owner Eva Tayor won the Haggin Cup a Tevis in 1974, finishing 6th. He was one of only two mules to ever win the cup since 1964. In 1976 he and his mate Sugar took Eva Taylor on the Great American Horse Race of 1976 from Schenectady NY to Sacramento CA. This was a 3000 mile 100 day affair. Hugo went lame at some point on the ride but Eva Tayor completed the ride on Sugar and finished 10th out of more than 200 entrants. Eva Taylor died in 1992 but Sugar lives on in retirement at 36 years of age in a pasture in Discovery Bay WA, reports Eva's husband. The 1976 3000 mile ride was won by Virl Norton who rode two mules also. There is a book out that covers this race that is very interesting. Anyway, I thought this was worthy of a post, sorry I could not get the article to go.
