Re: [RC] shoes vs. barefoot - heidiIt seems like every ride that I've been on stated that the horses must be shod. I just thought it was one of the AERC rules. Are there actually AERC rides that allow horses to go barefoot? Carol Yes, there are some that allow no hoof protection. It is not an AERC rule that there must be hoof protection. The rides which do not require hoof protection usually have non-abrasive footing, for the most part. On a few of our rides, we have occasionally allowed barefoot horses on the LDs, pending approval by the ride veterinarians upon exam. But due to some of the excesses of some of the barefooters, more and more rides are stating in their ride rules that some form of hoof protection is necessary. However, many WILL allow hoof protection other than shoes.
