Re: [RC] Anyone remember this ride? - Barbara McCraryIt was 1983, and I was on the board at the time. Dave Nicholson (The Duck) was opposed in his attempt to get his first XP ride sanctioned by another board member. I had crewed (from Simpson Springs to the Carson River) for a couple of riders on the 1979 British Post Office-sponsored XP ride, but I had to leave and return home for another commitment. Dave knew that I understood the workings of a multi-day ride and was very enthusiastic about the concept. He called me and asked for my support on the board for his proposed 1983 XP ride from Fairfield, UT to Fort Schellbourne, NV. Not only did I support it and urge the board to approve sanctioning, I attended the ride. (My little horse Courage placed second and won BC on the second day. I still have a treasured memento of that BC, a little "silver" cup with a hand printed sign on the base, "I ran the Hell out of my horse and I still won Best Condition - Simpson Springs XP". The finishing award was a bronze bookend in the shape of a duck's head and neck.) I also attended the 1984 ride and both Lud and I rode in 1985. I believe the Capitol to Capitol ride from Carson City to Sacramento was the first multi-day ride, but Dave's 1983 XP was the first multi-day ride to survive into the present. I checked my AERC Yearbooks from 1973 on and the ONLY one I am missing is 1977 so I think Bob Morris is correct, there was no Yearbook that year which is a shame. But I think I am correct in saying that the first multi-day ride sanctioned by the AERC was the Duck's first XP Ride. It was very controversial at the time and people at that Board Meeting will not have forgotten it. I'll check with the Duck to see what year his first multi-day ride was held. I find it hard to believe that the Board would have sanctioned a multi-day prize money ride in Nevada in 1977 when they balked at Susan Gibson's Race of Champions for many reasons, but one was that she gave expensive prizes—horse trailers, trips to England on the QE II, etc. The 1976 Yearbook lists the Schedule of 1977 rides and does not mention a multi-day /prize money ride, but that does not necessarily mean that it could not have been added at a later date. I was secretary of AERC then and it just seems as though I would have heard about it--not denying for a minute what Sindy McCosker read in a 1977 Western Horseman, but wonder if it was accurate.
