RE: [RC] blood flow to hoof (was archives and barefoot) - Brenda Jo JonesThere is an old saying that "a horse has 5 hearts". Unlike humans, as horses have no muscles from the "knee" on down, they depend on the expansion and contraction of the hoof to pump blood back up against gravity. Hooves expand when the horse's weight is put on them and contract when they are lifted. When rigid horseshoes are nailed on the hoof when there is no weight on them, they lock the hoof into a state of contraction. This restricts the blood flow. -----Original Message----- From: Kristen A. Physiologically, I don't understand how something on the bottom of the foot, that doesn't slow/stop blood flow between the heart and the hoof, would have the same effect as closing the arterial pipes (like a tourniquet, or the weight of your body). That's all. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brenda Jo Jones" <jonesbjo@xxxxxxxxx> To: "'Kristen A. Does it not become cold? Why would a horse be any different than a human? -----Original Message----- From: Kristen A. This is consistant with horses with shoes on." My horse is shod; if he nicks himself he bleeds, his feet still grow, so there must be enough blood flow for that. Maybe the other 3 legs are just *hot*?? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brenda Jo Jones" <jonesbjo@xxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 9:20 PM Subject: RE: [RC] to Jonni -re archives and barefoot Excuse me, but have you ever seen a thermograph of a shod foot and leg as compared to one without a shoe? Do check it out! http://www.thenakedhoof.com.au/html/purposepage.htm -----Original Message-----I DO get damm sickNtired of the folks that say that all shod horses are being crippled and 'cant feel their feet'.... Of course you, I, and most experienced riders know thats a pile of BS but what about the new to horses folks that read this drivel?Thank you, Teresa. I've been trying to figure out a way to put that diplomatically, but I think you said it best by just flat out saying it.
