Re: [RC] Wild Horses Letter in NY Times..on the mark - Catherine Pritchett

I think that science tells us that horses were on this continent before man, dissapeared for what ever reason before the appearance of man and that man brought them back. Consequently, the horses running lose on public lands are in fact feral, since their ancestors were domestic.

What people like Ryden do is distort science and say that since a version of the horse was here before man, the ones running lose now aren't feral. It's kinda like saying that the tabby cats that manage to survive after irresponsible people turn them lose in the wilderness aren't feral but natural because cougars are natural. The domestic horse and thus mustangs bear no more resemblance to the horse that origianally ran lose on north america than the tabby cat does to the cougar.

normally I never disagree with Heed but this time;
Hope Ryden is a gem and has done a lot to save MUSTANGS which are not
feral  horses.

I've yet to see ANYTHING backed by any valid science that suggests that the horses on public lands are anything BUT feral--ie descendants of domestic horses gotten loose. There is a lot of material PUBLISHED to the contrary, but none with any documentable evidence.
