[RC] downhill/gaited horses - Nancy Reed

I have to say, what a timely topic!  My new horse, Jazzi (half Arab, half Saddlebred) does something different when going downhill.  Man, she just flies and swing her back end.  I had my trainer ride her to figure it out and she is flat footin’ it down the hills along with that Saddlebred butt swing.  So maybe someday I get this gaited lingo down and will not make a fool of myself<G> I sure love Ridecamp!  Nancy Reed, Lazy J Ranch, Elfin Forest, CA

Well, all the folks who have been posting on this ain't blowin'=  smoke. We canter 'em downhill just fine;gait'em or slow walk 'em =  maybe on the really steep hills.I don't think good hard work is=  bad for a horse. If you have a problem on downhills,I suggest=  that it probably CAN be really improved, with work.In my horse's=  case, the breakover at the rear hooves was WAY to slow, from=  un-natural ("normal")shoeing. We sped up the rear breakover, and=  that really helped in downhills and all the rest of the time=  too.
