Personally as a rider I like the more organized and predictable vet checks using the FEI system. When you are tired it is very much easier to follow an organized ritual than to try to figure out how things are being done at this ride. Walking out a pulse lane around and back in, is also a logical consequence of trying to gain a few seconds by taking your horse to the P/R person sooner than you should. I agree, Ed. And many AERC rides have added a bit more "protocol" to vet checks for that very reason. All a part of the learning curve, and a part of the "compromise" that exists between the two. Also, the less organized vet checks are fine when there are few riders, but they get to be a real madhouse if there is a crowd. By having an organized protocol, one can handle many more riders fairly and quickly.
