Re: [RC] Riding Too Slow - Tina HicksI've been told by my wife, friends and others that sometimes (usually) I ride too slow. I've been told that riding too slow (and still meeting the cutoff times in endurance) can be just as hard on a horse (physically, emotionally, mentally) as riding too fast. The only time I've been told that going too slow might be worse than moving a little more was on the last 10 mile loop in the heat of the day on a 50 miler in the southeast (Big South Fork) a few years ago. The loop didn't have much water on it. My horse was tired but in good shape overall. It was about 3pm and *hot*. I made the comment to the vet that I had plenty of time to walk the last 10 miles and his comment was "you have enough horse to trot some. the breeze will help him and he'll get back to camp to rest/eat a little quicker rather then just roasting while walking on the trail" So we moved on a bit but, relatively speaking, we were still going pretty slow :), just quicker than earlier in the day (ride time of over 9 hours).
