[RC] Staying Warm - Riding In Cold Weather - Carolyn BurgessI live in Massachusetts and it gets pretty cold here. I also have an additional problem in keeping my extremities warm, it is called Reynaud's Syndrome, which is a vascular condition. Here are some musts: Turtle neck (I ride in cotton because I am allergic to wool) Turtle Fur neck warmer (keeps the heat from escaping via your neck) Ear muffs or headband made of fleece to cover ears Fleece cover for helmet Fleece pullover to go over turtleneck Mountain Horse winter jacket. Nothing will keep you warmer than this. Fleece socks Fleece FULL SEAT breeches (yes, the extra suede on the seat will help you stay warm). Tall boots or 1/2 chaps to keep your lower legs warm. The boots should have enough room so that air will circulate. Tight boots will cut off circulation and make your feet cold. Hands - my specialty. Mine are always cold. I ride in the old fashioned ski mittens. Knit on the outside, flannel on the inside with a layer of who knows what that are incredibly warm. I get them just a smidge large. They also have a leather palm, which makes riding easier. I have learned to ride in mittens. It is better than having cold fingers. I also carry warm water or herbal tea on me if it is really cold. I put it inside my jacket to help it stay warm and so that any heat seepage is to my benefit.
