Re: [RC] [RC] Cold Pony - Julie Fuller

A question: Has anyone used the "vests" for horses that Libertyville carries? They are made of quilted nylon for both warmth and to ease rubbing. I'd like to hear if anyone has used them and what they think of them BEFORE I get busy with the sewing machine.

you mean stretchies? Lycra 'underwear' for horses? We have used one on our older tb,to prevent shoulder rubs from his blanket./also liners that are nylon inthe sheets and blankets help. and so do shoulder gussets on your sheets....

Laurie,

No, I've got a couple of those too..... they help, but not on my gelding. He's very small bodied, with a huge stride, the blankets NEVER fit him right! The Sleazy helps, but by spring, unless I've been very, very good about taking his balnkets off as much as possible, he's rubbed damn near to the meat across the front. And yes, my sheets are gusseted. It's so hard to find a combination that works for each horse! My guys are out 24/7, and it's very windy here. If I use too much slick stuff under blankets, things start slipping off to one side, get stepped on and ripped. Then I'm washing anf fixing blankets again, usually when the weather is at it's worst and they really need them! *grumble*

Last year I tried something different..... I got a winter stable blanket, just a cheapie from Chicks. It was some sorta slick fabric on the outside. I turned it inside out and put it under his waterproof sheet. It worked wonders! He needs the extra insulation anyway. But, as mentioned above, it got off to one side, teice, and had to be repaired. I'm just glad I have a BIG washer, and a good sewing machine!

The reason I thought the vests were cool is because they would solve the rubbing problem without adding a lot of insulation when I don't want it. They are meant to be used under a blanket or sheet. I think I'll get busy with making them, and see if they work. I'm going to custom fit each horse (Thank God we only have four!) using quilted nylon and some really heavy taffeta. Even on sale, Libertyville wanted over $40 a piece for them... I can make all four for the price of one!
