[RC] Standardbreds in Endurance - Carolyn BurgessCan anyone who seriously campaigns a Standardbred please let me know whattheir heart rates are like. Any other information re this breed in serious endurance would be much appreciated. > Dianne: These horses are my breed of choice. I just found a mare that I think will be my 100 mile horse. I am currently riding a Standardbred gelding in 50 milers and he is a middle of the pack finisher. His RHR is in the low 30's, he is heavier muscled than I would like, so I do really have to work at disipating heat on him. He will get to 64 at an endurance hold in 5 - 7 minutes, which is a long time compared to an Arab, but I don't really care because the breed has so much more to offer to me than the pulse time. We also do CTR and he will pulse to the high 40's for the hold in 5 or so minutes and he gets to below 40 for the end of the ride (at 20 minutes). I like this breed because they are tough and have very good brains (sometimes too good).
