[RC] non-endurance - dog fencing - Ridecamp Guest

Sorry about being off-topic but I know lots of you are dog lovers too.  
Does anyone know if plain, uninsulated wire can be used for the electric collor 
dog fence systems if the wire is above ground  & in insulators like 
electric horse fencing?   At $45 per 500 feet the insulated wire kits would
make the system a pretty expensive for the area I'd like to set up.
