[RC] National Forest-Va-Scoping notice on New Trail System - saungier

Allegheny Highlands Trail System– Scoping Notice - November 2004

The Allegheny Highlands Trail System is a proposed major trail system that will be located in the James River and Warm Springs District of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in Virginia (just West of Lexington).  It will be comprised of existing as well as newly constructed trails and linkages.  The 2002 State Parks Bond Referendum provides for construction of a major horse camp in Douthat State Park, which will be in the center of the system.  The scoping notice only addresses the trails on the National Forest.  The equestrian camp within the state park is being designed with input from the equestrian community and will support the trails network.

With permission from the National Forest staff, a copy of the notice has been placed on the Virginia Horse Council website http://www.virginiahorsecouncil.org/TrailsInformation.htm.  The notice itself goes into great detail about the proposal and its history so I won’t repeat that information here.

You are encouraged to read and provide comments on the proposal.  They should be submitted in accordance with the instructions given on Pages 13-14, and are due no later than December 12, 2004.  I would also appreciate receiving a copy of your comments.
