[RC] Bitless bridles - terry banister - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Ron Shaffer ron.shaffer@xxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== From the instructions on how to use the Bitless Bridle: Stage 2. The noseband should lie on the head at a much lower level than you are accustomed to with a bitted bridle. The cheek straps should be adjusted, in an average sized horse, so that the lower edge of the noseband lies one and a half inches above the corners of the mouth. In a warmblood this measurement might be increased to 2" and in a pony reduced to 1". At these respective levels the noseband is still supported by bone at the level of the bridge of the nose and there is no risk of obstructing the nasal airway. It is a mistake to have the noseband higher, as purchase is lost. Conversely, the cavesson must not be so low that it presses on the fleshy part of the muzzle, where it would obstruct the nostrils. Such placement will result in serious resistance on the part of the horse and even rearing. Nevertheless, this having been said, the lower the noseband the better the control. As long as the noseband overlies bone rather than cartilage on the BRIDGE of the nose, no airway obstruction can occur. Under these circumstances, the noseband can safely overlie the fleshy part of the muzzle on the SIDE of the face, in the region of the so-called FALSE nostril. As with any tool from the tool kit it must be used correctly in order to get good results. And I agree that it is only one of many good tools available. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
