[RC] Conditioning - Carolyn Burgess<<<Would be interested to know how many miles you think one should condition a horse each week in order to keep them fit for middle of the pack 50's?>>> Deborah: I have found that less is more in keeping in condition. I am a middle of the pack rider on a Standardbred that has been competing CTR/endurance for 3 years and we ride 20 - 25 miles a week to stay in condition (usually twice a week during ride season). In addition to that training schedule, I'll do a 25 CTR and a 50 mile endurance ride per month from April until November. In the week following the 25, I might ride him once, a slow 10+/- mile ride, and after a 50, he gets the week off and is followed the next weekend by a slow 10+/- mile ride. I will do a 25 and follow it the next weekend by a 50, but I won't do it the other way around, as I want him to beable to recuperate from the 50. But, over the winter where he does significantly less work than the ride season, I want 6 - 8 weeks before doing a ride to bring him back into condition. During that time, I will do probably 30 miles a week, doing alot more interval training. This includes a couple of 25 CTR's before doing my first 50 of the season, and that first 50 will be very slow on nice, easy terrain. ===== Carolyn Burgess Email: carolyn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Website: http://www.doubleheartranch.com Phone: 1-978-897-6624 Fax: 1-419-735-1117 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
