Re: [RC] Standardbreds & Saddlebreds - heidiI am not a fan of breeding an NSH to an NSH. I feel you get a much more predictable product when you cross an Arab with a Saddlebred. If I had a NSH mare that I felt was great, instead of breeding her on, I would look for or breed the same cross again. I feel that I would have a better chance of getting one "just like her". You are right, Ed, that when dealing with crossbreds, the most predictable way to get one with the same traits is to repeat the cross, rather than breeding the individual. This is true whether you are breeding NSHs or any other horse crosses, or cattle, or wheat... When one breeds crossbreds to each other, one gets what is called genetic segregation--ie while you will get a few "in the middle," most of the offspring will tend to resemble either one of the parent breeds or the other.
