RE: [RC] Standardbreds and Part Standardbreds in Endurance - Jon . Linderman

Man I though you all knew how we start std bred races! Afterall the WEG
endurance race was started way back when at the Hague behind a rolling gate
on a harness track.

Horses are called to the gate by the started who sits facing the horses in
a "pope mobile" like contraption attached to anything from a nice cadillac
to a suburban. A driver maintains the steering but the pope mobile guy
controls the pace. A set of wings are opened to each side of the vehicle
almost like a humongous stall gate. This gate spans the width of the
track. Horses run their noses right up to their assigned spot, but unlike
a thoroughbred the horses are moving at close to 30 mph & there are no
dividers so to speak like a TB track. When they reach the start line the
driver accelerates rapidly ahead of the horses, folds in the gate and exits
the track or pulls up to the very top following the field, depends on the
track.

I have seen some nice std breds in the sport, of course been privvy to
seeing Baxter's wonderful horses quite a few times, and as far as the part
saddlebred, got one of them too.

I am curious how many people who compete on std breds know whether their
horse was a trotter or pacer if they were OT. Pacing IS genetic in std
breds by and large. Heck you can see the babies pacing in the field next
to the mares.

BTW, not to confuse the issue, but not all std breds are "standard". They
must at least have a std bred mom, but you will see on a std breds papers
from the USTA a line for "STANDARD" and the answer in that column is yes or
no. It is also listed in the sales books at spped sales. In theory,
though it isn't common, dad could be non-standard, sometimes unregistered
or a TB thrown in, maybe other things I am not aware of. Not sure if its
true, but someone once told mew Earle's horses could actually go to the
track if he wanted to & be registered as non-standard standard breds.....if
that makes sense.

Oh, Carolyn, I meant as compared to placing TB's in a starting gait. We
were wondering if perhaps some sort of motorized equipment was pulled along
in front of them then removed.

Which led us to wonder - how do they start trotting
horses at the track?

Nancy:

I don't know all the details of breaking them on the
track, but some start them slowly, getting them used
to the harness and then introducing the cart, and some
just hook them up and go.
