RE: [RC] Why Don't We See More Standardbred/Standardbred Crosses - Mcgann, Barbara

I think it takes a true horseman to actually "see" the standardbred, and look
past the often plain (or even ugly) head they tend to have.

Growing up in Utah, we rescued a standardbred mare that was running away with
her owners. Change of bit and a few lessons, and a 12 yr old girl that didn't
care if the horse ran like the wind fixed that. This mare turned out to be one
of the smartest, most versatile horses we've ever owned. I ran barrels, did
all the gymkhana games, jumped her, rode her in english pleasure/park classes,
roped, drove cows, used her as a parade horse, trail horse (she was happiest
doing that), drove her in a cart (obviously thats easy to do with an OTT
standardbred). She would adjust her antics to suit the rider that day. For
me, she was a blithering idiot - thought that we should always be going fast.
When my dad, who was crippled, rode her, she was a sedate, put one foot in
front of the other, walk quietly horse. Go figure!

Just last year, we came into possession of an older standardbred mare and 4 of
her offspring. We have a 7 yr. old, 16 hand gelding that is going to be able
to carry WEIGHT and trot all day. Her 3 year old filly went to Gene & Sue
Nance to go into their standardbred/arab crossing program. We also have her
coming 2 yr. old filly.

Standardbreds are bold horses - their whole mission in life is to go down the
trail as fast as they can. They almost never buck or spook or rear or anything
else....the only training issue I've ever had with them is holding them back!!

As someone who rides these horses (they are my breed
of choice), and is also an officer in a group that
promotes the Standardbred in their careers after
racing, it is not just the endurance crowd that has
passed over these horses. When someone is looking for
a horse, for whatever they want to do, and you say,
"Have you looked at Standardbreds?" They make a face
at you. I've seen people pay $5,000 for a broken down
OTT Thoroughbred, but won't even look at a free sound
Standardbred. And there are lots of them out there.
