I’ve got 7 horses and 2 of them are occasionally
behaving strangely.One has been
seen a couple times very actively foaming at the mouth. Once was within a half hour after feeding
beet pulp and strategy mix in the morning, the other was during a 2 hour ride
(no bit, S hack). My husband pretty
thoroughly checked her mouth (as much as possible w/o a speculum, he’s
much braver than me!) and couldn’t find any signs of trauma. Her teeth were done in August and didn’t
need much work.
The other horse has just been seen kind of chewing funny
when she hadn’t eaten anything recently, just a continual licking and
chewing, but not foaming.Her teeth
were also done in August (extremely thorough dentist).
They are all on the same pasture with none of the mountain
grass left, and plenty of weeds including a little locoweed, a small sage brush
type bush and lots of pine and juniper. They’re getting good hay that we’ve had for about 2 months.
Any guesses? They seem to be behaving completely normally otherwise. Only the one has been ridden recently and
she was her very normal strong self. The other has been given a break while
she has been getting gastroguard for recently
discovered ulcers (minor).
I can’t think of anything else relevant, but please
ask if I’ve left out anything obvious.I have 2 vets, one is of the point of
view that I should just keep an eye on them and the other is tough to get in
touch with and I usually can’t get appointments for a couple weeks (she’s
my specialist – chiro, dentist) so I haven’t
really gotten anywhere in that direction. Off to dig through my vet handbooks too.
