Re: [RC] Saddle Suggestions - heidiThe next saddle I rode her in was my Billy Cook Wade Roper (she wasn't going to blow any leather off of that one ;) - I felt balanced and secure, but that is way too heavy to expect her to tote on a long ride. Nat, why do you think it is too heavy for her? If it fits her, and it fits you, perhaps you should just stick with it for awhile, until you are more used to her. The weight will only be a detriment in terms of going FAST and running for placings--which is a scenario that should be a ways in the future for both of you at this point. In any event, time spent in the familiar saddle getting used to her will make you far better prepared to choose the next saddle. And as an aside, as a kid growing up ranching on Arabs, all of our Arabs and Arab crosses toted big heavy western saddles at one time or another, with no ill effect. And those ridden by family members who still ranch are still ridden with big heavy western saddles. My dad "made" his endurance saddle by taking an old-fashioned center-rigged western saddle that he found extremely comfortable to a saddlemaker and having him remove the horn and put a nice leather patch over the "spot"--the horn got in his way going up and down steep hills. He rode his half-Arab over 1000 miles in that saddle (alas, didn't join AERC in the beginning, so it didn't all get recorded)--including a 6-day multiday--and never had a problem with it. The saddle passed the "endurance litmus test" for saddles--it fit the horse, and it fit him!
