You can't use detergents on them.You can buy either spraycan waterproofing yourself , or use, Thompsons water seal and spray them with that. Nikwax also has a waterproofer.No waterproof/breathable system is foolproof, at a certain level the waterproof /breathablility can be overwhelmed in humid conditons or if they sweat alot.Also some systems must have a lining to work.And dirt can mess up and clog the breathability level.
