RE: [RC] [RC] Question about weight divisions - Howard Bramhall

BC really has nothing to do with competing in weight divisions. The point scale for BC does give extra points for those who weigh more (heck, we need something here, throw me a bone) but has no affect on your standings in your particular weight division. Heck, being a heavyweight you could finish in 12th or 13th at a ride but still be the number one placer in your weight category.

ONly one BC winner per event and, that's a good thing.

I'd suggest you go with the middleweight division this year. Gives one an incentive to lose weight and if you're unsuccessful and end up weighing more, you're still legal. You can always enter in a lower weight category than what you actually weigh. The reverse is not true.

The argument that's been floating on RC is folks who are riding in a heavier category than where they should be riding. If I weigh 195, with tack, but carry 15 lbs of water, am I legal to be in the heavy weight category? Most would say I should ride in the middle weight category but, according to the rules, am I able to be a heavyweight? This is basically the discussion that's going on.

You can move down in any weigh class (I could be a featherweight if I wanted) but not into a heavier one if you don't meet the minimum weight for that category. I forecast my weight class on my future beer intake. If I plan on drinking a lot this year (if Bush gets re-elected, this will happen) I'll consider listing myself as a heavyweight.

Howard

Subject: [RC] Question about weight divisions

Aside from all this flap, I have an honest question about weight divisions. When I joined AERC, I was definitely well within HW range. After a year of competition and training, the 2x I was in top ten I weighed in at 209 [hurrah for the Abetta - my mare doesn't need to carry anything heaver]. So I am wondering if I need to go to MW [although I realize 209 is within the 4%].

I know that Laura's comment below is tongue in cheek, but if you are heavier than your range, and you ride in the lower division, doesn't that give you an unfair advantage that you will weigh heavier than other MWs and thus get more points for that section of BC?

Maybe this is not a BC issue at all but rather competing against other people for a year end weight division award? I guess I don't fully understand the issue?

With all the flap about wt divisions and the DAL nominations I have to let ya'll know that I am mostly just over the line as a heavyweight and ride as a middle weight....SO VOTE FOR ME!!!

Disclaimer.....for those of you who don't know my stupid sense of humor....I AM JUST KIDDING!!!!! Well, not about being on the line between HW and MW, just about the 'vote for me' because of it.

Geesh, one gets worried about how one is taken on this forum.....

;-) see the smiley face????
