I'm new to the sport but I don't see why they allow you to weigh
waterbottles and food and such.   Those items should not be with you at
the end of the ride.  They will be consumed.  There is no need to put
the weight of those items in your total weight.

The AERC rules are not specific about what is weighed--the above is simply
common sense, but does get abused at times.  FEI rules are very clear on
this point, and (particularly if you are close to the weight cut-off) the
"stuff" you carry to make weight is inventoried and can be checked
periodically throughout the ride to see if it is still there.

While FEI rules do tend to get a bit picky at times, AERC rules tend to go
the other direction toward simplicity, leaving riders on the honor system.
