Re: [RC] Boycotting Sporting Events (was: UAE Culture) - heidiThere is plenty of historical precedent for the reasoning that going to the 1936 Berlin Olympics provided a tacit acceptance of Nazi policies as well as being lulled into a false sense of security by the "gracious hosts" of the games and may have contributed to Hiltler's boldness with respect to his expansionist tendencies. I would submit that the error was not in going, but in failing to see the handwriting on the wall, both there and elsewhere. Hitler gave plenty of warning of what he was doing--and was largely ignored by the civilized world. Had he been stopped when he made his first move (was it Chechoslovakia?) millions of lives would likely have been saved. And by the time he hit Poland, it should have been crystal clear. Better yet, had he been stopped in 1936, when we had a pretty good show of his intentions at the Olympics, it REALLY would have been smart. We are supposed to learn from history--but sadly, we rarely seem to. And I still maintain (as do many historians) that Jesse Owen's wins were a real slap in the face to the Nazi propaganda machine. What WOULD we have learned or accomplished by NOT going? Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
