Re: [RC] [RC] Arabian Nationals - UGH - RHONDA LEVINSONWe showed at Scottsdale one year. When we came home, I showed a photo of the horse that won my horse's class to my family. My entire family's response was, "wait, we thought that you went to an Arab show. Isn't this one of those Saddlebred horses?"In a breed known for short, strong backs, people are now advertising and bragging about how their horses are "long and tubey!" By the way, my filly got the gate at Scottsdale. Afterward, I went up to one of the judges and asked if he would tell me why; I showed him my filly. I pointed out that I thought the filly had perfect legs, a great angle on her shoulder and hip, nicely set neck with a beautiful hook, you can divide her body into nearly perfect thirds, she has a stunning face and ears, and she moves beautifully. The judge said he agreed with all of those things, but said the main problem was that she lacked "Arabian spirit." I asked what he meant by saying she lacked Arabian spirit. He pointed out that when the class was asked to walk on a loose line, she just walked along. I pointed out that every other horse in the class was spinning and rearing and trotting in place and pulling on their handlers. He said, "Exactly!" "So, you're penalizing her for being the only horse in the class to be able to follow the instructions and to be actually halter trained?" I asked. At that point, the judge walked away in a huff. Later, I was also told that my filly's croup was not flat enough, and her neck was not "freaky" enough, and that she was too short backed to be really good in the show ring. Also, the colt that won the yearling halter class had kicked one of the judges. How's that for "Arabian Spirit?" I also saw the B guy outside the ring at one point, pretending that he didn't notice his stable people coming up and hazing the horse he was telling. The ring steward was standing there with his back to them. I tried to get him to turn around and he flat out refused. I don't show anymore and have stopped breeding for the show ring. It's pointless because I refuse to breed those kind of horses. Rhonda My boss just returned from the Arabian Nationals and brought lots of glossy literature back with her. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but WHY OH WHY do people who apparently want to ride Saddlebreds instead breed Arabs to LOOK and MOVE like Saddlebreds? One ad in the show program is a pic a Saddlebred-clone Arab and actually dares to exclaim "The new vision of the Arabian Horse". EEK!!!!
