Re: [RC] [RC] White Hairs everywhere - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Nicole z_arabs@xxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Sounds like a sabino. Fairly common in Spanish horses and apparently, Arabians also: Sabino is a white pattern that the horse is born with. Some changes may occur through the years, but it's basically white markings with pink skin. Rabicano roaning can change a bit from year to year or season to season (although not as dramatically as true roan generally changes season to season). Rabicano is often seen with sabino, but not always -- you can have sabino without any rabicano (common) and you can have rabicano without any sabino (rare, but does happen). However, the spots in question: white spots that just show up out of nowhere, are most likely Birdcatcher spots. They may come and go, some are permanent, and some are not. They're most common on chestnut or other red-based horses (palomino, for instance, is a red-based color). Birdcatcher spots are generally small -- dime sized or less -- but, they can be larger. And, FWIW, dark spots -- usually larger than the most common Birdcatcher sized spots -- are Bend Or spots. Like Birdcatcher spots, they're most common on chestnuts & red-based horses, and they're also named after a TB that exhibited them. Bend Or spots seem a little less common than Birdcatcher spots, but they're not particularly rare either. Oh, and any of these spots occuring on a grey are probably from the grey gene, although greys can have any and all other color modifiers as well. Just as a random bit of trivia, big white spots on a grey are called Chubari spots. :) ~Nicole =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
