RE: [RC] [RC] [RC] need ideas for good horse areas in west - Lonnie Ruesch

Hi Charlene,

Do you mean water/green grass for your home or the area in general? We are in an equestrian community just outside of St. George. We have our own wells. While we have been in a draught situation for a few years, and the area pushes for daught resistant or desert landscaping, we have no shortage of water for our homes, and most of us have lawns. I could plant my pasture as it has been in years past, but of course my water bill would reflect that, and my husbands tractor is broken. (Our community actually has the most lenient water rates for the whole state.) St. George proper has more golf courses than you can shake a stick at. They do place water restrictions during the summer which basically restricts outside watering to evening and nightime hours. While many of the fields are being turned into housing developments (which I personally hate!), we still have farmers producing alfalfa, grass hay, silage, etc., getting their water from the Virgin River. During the summer the desert is actually very green with bunch grass, June grass, sage, chapparral, rabbit brush, and even the cactus are beautiful when they bloom. Personally, I hate snow. But love to see it covering Pine Valley Mt. and Utah Mt. because that means more water in our aquafir. Even in winter, our desert plants don't all go gray like in some desert climes I have seen, but stays in the "green-grey" spectrum, so we don't get that dreary look like other places.

You might consider So. UT. We live in St. George, and yes it gets hot (altho this last summer was very mild) but mountains are only an hour away.
Our property costs are pennies on the $$ compared to Las Vegas or California I am told. And most important, we do have a Costco!! (If you want a little cooler, look at Cedar City - 50 miles farther north. They do get some snow while St. George rarely does.) No we don't have "third floor women's wear", our malls are single story. But we also don't have a big bug problem either. We are desert, but with our red and black rocks, the scenery never gets boring even in winter. And Washington Co. has a 60,000 acre reserve set aside for hiking, mt. biking, and horseback riding. We also have a state park and national forest close by where we can ride.

Loving it in So. UT
