RE: [RC] need ideas for good horse area in the west - Ranelle RubinIt sounds like the eastern Sierras would suit the climate/mountains/open space criteria. What is your budget? I was in Reno today and picked up a R.E. section..prices have skyrocketed! For a nice house on 5 ac. You are looking at a price of at least 600k..The next thing to consider is how far away from a real town are you willing to be? Bishop is very isolated. The Carson Valley-Garderville/Minden/Washoe Valley area would be my choice..Less than an hour from the nearest airport is always my criteria..With good cover, horses can live all winter unblanketed (except a few severe cold snaps-care to comment Karen C???)..I lived in Lake Tahoe for 6 yrs and wintered my horse in Garderville every year..You can ride almost any time. It does get hot and has limited water on the trail in summer, but that's when you drive 30 min and get up into the Sierra's...The Tahoe Rim Trail is an amazing place..the Carson Iceburg Wilderness/just to name a few... Happy hunting... We do love mountains, so it would be nice to have some nearby with ample trail access. We do not compete, but we do extensive trail riding at endurance training ride speed :-) We also plan to start doing a lot of packing. Sounds an awful lot like Bishop, California to me; or anyplace else that is "high desert" so I think it also sounds kinda like Oreana, Idaho but Steph would know more about that. Other places include the Reno/Sparks area as well as Tropic, Utah (except maybe for the Costco within 100 miles part). There are also probably some places in both Arizona (like Sedona, Prescott or Flagstaff, depending on which you prefer a little less heat in the summer or a little less snow in the winter) and New Mexico that meet this description. You could probably also find some areas on the western slope of the Sierras as well (although they will probably be pricier, less hot in the summer, but more precipitation in the winter). kat Orange County, Calif. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
