[RC] the Stepping pace - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Ray O'Donohue rno2m@xxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== The stepping pace gait, the most common TWH gait,IS a smooth 4 beat gait.It is not the "full" hard pace of a harness horse. In terms of timing it is exactly halfway between the hard pace and a running walk, and it is usually very smooth, thankfully, for it is the gait most field trialers and TWH owners must live with.It is often called a running walk, which is incorrect,or some other term, which may or may not be correct.Head nod is almost entirely absent. If any horse is walking in flat walk,or a running walk,he MUST nod in a rather pronounced way. Where the head-nodding running walk really shines in my opinion is in very bad terrain ,where it is very safe, and can transition seamlessly into and out of the lope. Most of our field trial walkers do a running walk to some extent in some situations. What we almost never see is horse doing a running walk over a range of speed and in spite of terrain changes. I am not naive enough to think "all TWH's did a RW all the time back in the good old days before the Big Lick Show people ruined everything." But my guess is that the real-deal RW horse was a lot easier to find than it is nowadays. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
