Re: [RC] [RC] Fear when mounting/dismounting - Karen Sullivan

I've tried it. My cousin can do it and she makes it look easy. She can
hop on a 16 hand horse that way - I've watched her. Cousin says there's a
trick to it, but she's never been able to explain adequately to me.

*I can still do it, but my height limit now is about 15.1....here is how I
do it:

I grab mane right in front of withers with my left hand....and back up
(facing the rear of horse) as
far as my arm will let me Take2-3 running steps and bounce off left leg,
grab
wither with right hand and swing right leg up and over horse.

If you start with a too tall horse you will never get it.....start on a pony
and then
when you get the hang of it, practice on taller horses.

I say practice on all the horses you can find., it's good training for them.

My daughter who is 17 has a funny method...she does the hop, skip and jump
like me...then just flings her belly over horse and then swings right leg.
sometime
her mare starts off while she is half way on.

Funniest thing that ever happened to me getting on was a bareback ride one
day on
the 14.1 hand Arab (I am almost 6 ft) I had my young horse following loose.
Got to the
top of a very, very steep hill. I contemplaced riding down it bareback with
this mare
with no withers, nixed that idea, so decided to get off and walk down, which
I did grasping the bushes
along the side, with both horses following. I then turned the mare sideways
and stood
on the uphill side to make getting on easier. Got in position and did my
swing,and the
minute I started she turned uphill and started trotting up the hill, with me
scrambling
to get right leg over, and clinging to her mane. There was no way I was
going to come off
that mare; she would have headed off for points unknown! Before I knew it, I
was right back at
the top of the hill again!!! Of course the baby followed back up. I was so
pissed at that
mare I did just turn, say, "what the heck" and rode her back down the hill.
I am just glad
nobody was watching!
Karen
