RE: [RC] physiology & conditioning - Mike Sherrell

For what it's worth, the October Equus, p. 14, says that Ohio State
exercised horses enough to deplete 60% of their glycogen, and fed them diets
containing 80% grain, grain and hay mixed, or 100% hay for three days. The
high-grain eaters replenished energy levels within 72 hours, the others
longer; they didn't say how long. 80% grain is really too much. I'm not sure
how hard they exercised them to deplete that much glycogen. Anyway, at a
rough estimate it looks like it takes more than 3 days to recover from heavy
exercise. Maybe I'll check the OSU website and see if I can get more
details.

In humans, heavy exercise creates small tears in the muscle tissue; I think
I remember that it takes 48 hours for those to heal.

THE QUESTION: Why the extended rest? What is the particular
physiological issue? It is obviously not muscle. Humans don't need a
week off after a marathon. A couple of days, maybe; not a week.

Couple of thoughts and I am very interested in this also.......it's not
so much about muscle....maybe more about toughening ligaments
and tendons?

Also.....the human can certainly gague how sore they are. I know if I
overdo it running I don't feel it so much the next day...but more the
second day.

Also.....the horse cannot tell you if he is hurting and some are so stoic
anyway you will not observe the soreness.....so err on the safe side and
give more time off???
