Re: [RC] Fw: shooting for an endurance mount for next year - heidi

Lori, look at lots of horses, ride as many of them as possible. There are sweet calm arabians and spooky wild ones. I have three, one calm as possible, one that is determined to jump off every trail everytime he sees his own shadow, and one in the middle!! They are all different, but they are all sensitive, it usually takes only a harsh word to reprimand, they are curious, will follow anyone around the pasture, checking out what you're doing! They are high energy and will tend to self exercise. Two of mine are 18 and 20 and they run around ALOT! They are the calmer ones. The spooky guy stands and eats and looks old! Go figure. Now, I do have something to compare to, my first horse was an appy mare. She had alot of TB in her and had crappy feet! She would have made a nice little endurance horse though. She did not have the bigger QH type muscles. She had a tendancy to be very stubborn. We have an appy right now. Look him up in AERC 3-S Dee Bar Dandy. He has over 1300 endurance miles and he's 27 years old. He completed a 25 at Klickitat this last spring with my stepdaughter aboard. It was her first ride. Dandy is awesome, but also very stubborn! I've heard this is an appy trait! He's also very smart, super calm, never spooks and upon looking at his ride record, he did 50's and higher, was in top ten 25% of the time apprx. and I didn't see any pulls. To give his rider/owners credit, Beth Skaggs daughter rode him over 600 of those miles when he was 18 or so. My friend Jullie Fuller (on ridecamp) had an awesome arab/appy mare she did some endurance on. Rayna was awesome, but on the trot outs, she just didn't see the point and her appy would come out and her scores would drop for attitude. (Or appytude!) I do like that cross alot!!! Dandy has a QH dad with alot of TB in him, and 5 gen. back on mom's side is an arab! He has decent feet though! So, if you go with an appy, watch the TB lines and check those feet!

Subject: shooting for an endurance mount for next year

I watched last night on the RFD channel on the Appaloosa show, and it was about endurance.  I was so excited to see it on there, because the closest I've came to endurance is thru here, reading all your travels!

I have always had quarter/paints all of my life, be it showing or now on again off again trail riding for our family.  I really want to try endurance, and am shooting for a mount next year.  My question is this, after watching the show last night, why is it that an "appy" has it in it for endurance vs. a quarter/paint (in my mind they are in the same category) also as I was watching it, I was on the phone with my sister and it was more of a visual (hoping to catch a repeat sometime this week) .   I would really like to try for an arabian, but no offense, some of the messages I have read about some crazy arabians has had me turned off, and quite frankly, I'm not familiar with the arabian breed to really know what might make a good prospect.  Obviously I plan to do reading over the winter, I keep up here, and check the archives.  Was just more or less wondering after I watched that last night, and it was appaloosa's if being the "type" person I've been with my equines would an appy be the better step to begin with versus the arabian?
