Re: [RC] Ultium and certified dealers - Karen SullivanHi Jon, Again, wondering cost on this, and how is it that much different from Purina Athlete, which was the last pricey effort directed toward the competition horse, being a high fat feed. Why is this feed better than Athlete? I tried Athlete a couple of time, detered by the cost (upwards of $25 a bag.....and the hard keeper picky horse didn't like it so I had to sneak it into other feed she liked better.....my guess is Athlete didn't sell well due to price. Anyway, can you ask your wife? It was quite extensive. A day long affair with 3 of the head R&D guru's including a former student Dr. Ray Geor. More than most might want, but it is what the company wanted to do. If nothing else knowing the extensive work that went into this product makes the cost seem somewhat justified. As I said once before R&D for other feed companies, companies my wife worked for, was a phone conference asking wich product label to copy. As they say imitation is the highest form of flattery. We have everything from a retired race race horse, an old arab gelding, an endurance horse, and an active (and successful!) race horse on the product. We feed it straight up, no additions, no dilutions........keeping it simple. In all aspects of what we look for the product has been great. We are also now seeing a need to cut the product back in terms of pounds of feed, saving $. Coats, muscle tone, feet, overall health, etc..........all wonderful. Jon K. I had a similar question sometime ago when I was first trying it out and got the following response from Purina. " the reason we required our dealers to be certified is because it is important for our dealers to know as much about new products like Ultium as they can. They need to know some basic knowledge as some customers can really ask some great questions. Knowing what kind of horse the feed is intended for, ingredients, the R&D story behind Ultium etc. We also educate them on how to market, display and promote the product. When you put as much time into developing a new feed like Ultium it just does not make much since to just put it in the store and see what happens. As for who can sell Ultium, any dealer that is certified can sell it. The vast majority of our dealers are or will be certified. We have launched this product by regions, the US will be covered by early 05. We were lucky here in Texas as we got it this spring. " It's working fine for my two guys.
