[RC] Nutrena XTN - Agilbxr

Alpine in heavy work takes a lot of food to keep weight. Where he boards, they
feed him 2#'s Nutrena 10% pellets. He's the only high work horse, the rest
stand around alot, or occasionally go out on an hours walk and call it a trail
ride. I started supplementing his 10% pellets with a pound of XTN twice daily.
He also gets beet pulp mashes when I go ride (about 3 times a week). His
mashes consist of about 3/4 scoop beet pulp, 1/2 scoop alfalfa pellet, some
applesauce, and if I'm feeling generous, some carrot chunks. He's on a dry lot
with coastal hay 24/7.

His attitude on this feeding has been fantastic. He's not too hot, he's
controllable in a group!!!!!!!! and he's got plenty of energy. Better yet,
he's getting chunky! We will be cutting back his 10% pellets to see if we can
cut down the amount of concentrates he gets. The XTN is around $13 a bag, but
one bag is lasting me a month right now. Beet pulp is cheap and one 50# bag
lasts forever, and alfalfa pellets are pretty inexpensive too. So it doesn't
stretch my budget too much. I just got a $5 coupon from nutrena...so my check
book will like that even better!

When I tried feeding a timothy/alfalfa mix hay, I had a VERY hot horse. Ok, T
& A is for rides only, and then if I'm bribing a picky horse.... Straigt
alfalfa I imagine would make me a stick of dynamite on four legs. Ouch....
The coastal hay here in florida doesn't have a whole lot of nutritional
value...it's more to keep them occupied for long periods of time.

Now, that's the feeding regimine for one little high work Paso Fino. (I
someone ask me about my quarter horse pony the other day. Alpine and I corto'd
away...)

Juli and Alpine (munch, munch, munch)
