[RC] molasses content of feeds - Karen

http://members.tripod.com/ridephotos/molasses.html

This chart (still in progress) has information on the % of molasses, protein, fat and fiber in various feeds.

My horses favorite is the Complete Horse 10 by Manna Pro--it has a low molasses content--1.5%. Next favorite is Senior, with 7%. I mix both with beet pulp, or sometimes feed solo. I am also careful to buy beet pulp that is low in molasses. I had some that turned out to be 14 to 16% molasses, and it wasn't so much the % that was the problem but the quantity of it. Something high in molasses might not be a big deal if you only feed a cup or two of it a day compared to feeding 4 or 5 pounds of something that has a lower % for several days before and during a ride. It has helped the horse I was having not-calm-enough-ride-start issues with earlier this year. He has improved greatly, a combination of better feed management and more experience.

I tend to stick on the lower end of protein % when possible as well -- as it seems to be the combination of protein and/or alfalfa/clover in their feed that will cause problems, usually allergy related to some degree and also increases sun sensitivity which can lead to scratches.
