When we had the wild fires here in San Diego 3 months ago I was injured when a horse spooked and stepped on my bare foot. (I know...always wear shoes around horses but normal rules fly out the window when there are flames in your backyard and you are loading horses).
Anyway finally met with an orthopedist foot specialist yesterday and she shot my foot with steroids. There is permanent damage to the muscle that connects the toes (the doc said you don't use them anyway...can you believe she said that?) Along with nerve damage and something wrong with the outside bone. I have to go in for a bone scan on the whole foot. Also she found 2 occult fractures that had healed in the three months. (Am I tough or what? I rode my first 50 like this but won't ride when I have cramps<g>).
Has anyone out there ever had this type of injury? The hoof slammed on the top part of the arch facing the outside of the foot...the horse shoe cut the skin. Doc said the only thing to fix the nerve problem is sever the nerves to the foot...she said it will be permanently numb, which I am not crazy about doing... The torn muscle can't be fixed as it has grown back and is fibrous.
