They have no relevance to a working animal. <snip> It would be my own humble opinion, the use of the quarterhorse in crossed with other breeds has more to do with trying to put that quieter attitude into the mix. Many riders cannot quite live up to the requirements of that fire of the Arab or the high spirited run instinct of the thoroughbred. <snip> A little quarterhorse deftly brought into the mix can sometimes tone that down a notch to make a performance animal with a softer attitude. <snip> The popularity of the Arab breed in the seventies caused havoc itself. Popularity has its price. Just had to take these bits out of Adelia's post and reference this back to Arabs. 1) The Arab traditionally WAS the horse with the sane and quiet attitude, that could be handled even by small children, etc., despite his quickness and fire. 2) It was the breeding of Arabs into the caricature halter horses and ring-around-the-rosy English horses in the 70s that really wreaked havoc on the breed, not their popularity. The changing of the breed into a fire-breathing twitching idiot that only a trainer could handle actually damaged the popularity of the Arab as the ideal family riding horse--and the boom and crash came about due to false investment values, rather than popularity. The same premise that has done such damage to the QH has likewise damaged the Arabian. Both breeds were generally more athletic working horses prior to the 60s and 70s, but there are still breeders of both breeds who have maintained their standards and continued to breed sane, sound working horses. Kudos to those who stuck by their guns in both breeds and brought forward sane, sound individuals for those of us following after to both ride and breed--in both breeds!
