RE: [RC] [RC] Arabs vs. Mustangs - Laurie DurginArabians were bred for thousands of years to endure harsh conditions and to be survivers. It is just that they tend to be the highest in number because they were bred to go all day in harsh conditions with almost no feed.) Just like thourobreds are bred for short distances and will tend to beat any other breed in what it was bred to do. Arabs tend to have better metabolics for long distances and they have more slow twitch muscle fibers, opposite from a Qh which has a higher percentage of fast twitch muscles, than other breeds. So if you want to do 50 or a 100 miles in a day , arabs tend to do it better than other breeds. Some horses of other breeds can do it. There are some Qh , tb, gaited horses, ponies, mustangs etc. in endurance, even mules.Mustangs are a toss up, they are a mix of everything turned out on the range that survived. Some would/do make excellent endurance horses, but many would not. Also it takes time and know how to train a wild horse that many people don't have. Many people would rather buy a domesticated trained horse. Many people here talk about arabians cause they have them...does not mean other horses aren't welcome or can't do it.....
