Re: [RC] [RC] colic/different food at rides - rides2far@xxxxxxxxShe rarely says it's ok to let a horse eat stuff at a ride (as in the day before, day of and day after) that they don't eat at home. SOME is fine as long as it's not too much, but, by and large, a horse should be eating at a ride what they eat at home. In a perfect world that's fine...but when you're in competition, and your horse *needs* SOMETHING moving through that gut to keep things going right...you let him eat...period. If he can eat a little of someone else's hay that appeals to him and get that gut going again, then he'll eat when I stop on the trail to offer grass. If the peanut hay, which he's never seen, looks good to him as we go by, I'm going to slow down and let him steal some...then he can steal a bite of somebody's mash as I go by, and I'm sure to leave my pan right by the thoroughfare so everyone else's horse can steal a bite as they go by. I think it helps a lot more horses than it is liable to hurt. We can easily lable something a danger that's often a great help. How many times have we considered ourselves *saved* by a cold front coming in? I can understand how maybe it might cause *something* but it also often saves us too.
