[RC] [RC] Horses getting too full - DreamWeaver

 I've often
wondered if I should limit his intake prior to a ride
and if so, how much?

Crysta -- you should let him eat as much hay as he wants to, only maybe start farther in advance of the ride than the night before.

I remember how I used to worry about the horses eating so much hay, especially on multidays. Eating lots of hay, I have learned is really the best thing for them.

I like to start two or three days ahead of the day I am going to leave (trailer) to the ride. I will give the horses free choice all the hay they can eat, and also soaked beet pulp. No grains or concentrates though. I like them to have a full tank before the trailer trip, so letting them stuff themselves for a few days ahead of that seems to help a lot. At least <knocking on wood> in the almost 15,000 miles my three horses have done so far none of them have ever needed treatment at (or following) a ride, or had a metabolic problem or a colic.
